COUNSELING STUDENTS
As off counseling, I understand we are allowed to give career counseling but as off personal counseling, drug and alcohol counseling, as it says in the chapter; are we allowed to give advise into their personal lives?
Gil,
Advising students is a great deal of time we spent with them outside the classroom. They need to know the resources that are available to them as our common goal is to achieve success.

Perhaps the best counseling we can offer our students falls within the context of our mission as as an educational facility.Counseling concerned with improving study habits, building a professional resume and career planning fall within the schools stated purpose. Issues dealing with serious psychological or medical problems can be resourced out to professionals in the appropriate fields.
Karen,
Yes, you are correct. Rule is specific.

I agree Advisor is the best title, but In the COMMISSION FOR INDEPENDENT EDUCATION INDEX page 39, under 6E-2.010 Agents, (13)
"All licensed agents representing an institution shall be called agent, admissions representative, sales representative, or field representative. The terms counselor or advisor, or modifications thereof, shall not be used by agents." Our title now is Alumni Advisor; but I am assuming from this rule that we will have to have a different title for Flordia. Am I correct in my understanding?
Sherine,
We should only provide them resources to assist them in making their own decisions.
Patty Aronoff
Agreed I prefer to advise the student on what might be best.....and provide them with professional counselors for problems beyond my professional training.
Omar,
Agreed! The term "advisor" is the one that best describes the services we provide. The term "counselor" is misused and misconstrued.
Patty Aronoff
Kevin,
Absolutely! This is why the term counselor is not recommended for use. We associate the term "counselor" with a professionally trained individual. At our schools, advisor is the best term. We advise!
Patty Aronoff
From what I understand, we are not even allowed to call ourselves "Counselors". This should be something that all of us should try to steer clear from to avoid any penalties on us and our institutions.
I do agree that empathizing with students and their situation is definitely important, but I think we should be enablers by finding the positives in their negatives and pointing them in the right direction about where they can receive the help they need.
I think counseling is an important aspect of the profession but drug and alchohol counseling should be left to the people trained in those areas.
Moira,
There are many service agencies but as a school,we need to establish relationships and networking to really know what they can provide.
Patty Aronoff
I always kept a list of resources in my previous admissions role since I worked in a large metropolitan area and came across all sorts of requests and situations. It is great to help but you can only listen, you cannot advise. Refer them to local organizations.
Yea, you would want to refrain from going too deep into personal situations. Stick on the focus of enrolling them if it is appropriate for them and what they are looking for and if they meet the school admission requirements.
Ayelet,
I would not personally advise students but rather provide them resources to obtain assistance from trained professionals.
