I think it is also very important for the "seasoned co-workers" to not only meet the new employees and spend time with them, but also to recognize their challenges and perhaps discover ways to improve upon existing training programs.

Normally a lot of instutions make this part of the training period for an admissions or any other employee. It's important not only for the new employee to get to know people but for everyone else to get to know the new employee.

Try visiting classrooms and talking with instructors. They love to share their passion. By being in a class, you experience it from a student's perspective giving you a new view.
