Product Knowledge

Product Knowledge is the key to be a successful admissions representative because you will be more confident in helping prospective students to enroll in the right program for them base on their needs and goals.

Isabel,
I am still amazed at the number of reps that do not really have a knowledge base of the programs they sell. Schools that actively promote product knowledge have the best information passed on to the prospective students.

Product knowledge is as important or more important than sales. If you do not know your product it is very difficult to sell it. In our institutions we have product knowledge by each department on a quarterly basis and more if need be. The program chair meet with all the admission rep and provide an inservice with handouts and powerpoints relative to the program. This allows the reps to be knowledgeable of the different programs providing accurate and honest information allowing the prospective student to make informed decisions about their future career choice.

Hiram,

Absolutely! We need to continually learn more about the programs our school offers.

Erin,
Exactly! When they are signing up for a program, they need to know every aspect. Many students sign up for programs not realizing the full breadth of what they are committing to. We have an obligation in Admissions to provide them this information.

Vivian,

Agreed! The more you know, the better you can explain the program to the prospective student.

Andrew,
Product knowledge is the cornerstone. I am amazed at how many reps do not make a strong effort to learn about the programs at their school.

Program Knowledge is Key to being a Good Admissions Rep.

It is very important to know the programs at your school and what they offer. If you have a prospective student say she wants Nursing for example but she tells you that she is not good at dealing with blood then thats where your product knowledge comes in and you may want to let her know what other options that are available that do not deal with blood.

A basic understanding of each program is essential in order to describe and promote the program. Finding out as much as possible through asking questions, speaking with current students and talking to faculty will support program knowledge.

Product knowledge is one of those aspects that i have noticed some schools do not do enough of. Many schools push for the sales side of admissions with out realizing that product knowledge is the corner stone to success

Janet,
The more you know about a program, the better you can speak to the details.
