Transferring credits

why is it important that the credits transferred are from an accredited agency institution

Rachel,
Each school is different. You must compare the curriculum and outcomes to what you currently offer. Determination comes from a well-seasoned registrar or Director of Education.

Where can a gaining Insitution Admission rep get more information on the process and specifics of how to accept credits? I'd appreciate a link or advice.

Rachael,
You are absolutely right!

It will depend on your institution and what their transferrability requirements are for the student.

Diane,
It can be very frustrating in trying to explain the process. Students often only want to hear the good news and don't want to hear they still have to find out more.

Theresa,
It is the same process no matter whether is it pubic or private.

Johanna,
Great post and advice!

Pedro,
Transfer of credits is such an individualize situation and so many factors count in.

Indrid,
It is the student's responsibility to research the transferability of credits as each situation is unique.

Edgard,
Good advice! It is a complicated process which differs for each institution and there are no guarantees.

I always tell the student it's up to the gaining institution whether they accept the credits or not.

The student should diligently investigate the transfer of credits. After all, they should be concerned if paying for the same classes is to their advantage

Whether or not, transferred credits are from an accredited institution is not the complete issue. However, your institutions policy can be that the credits are required to be from an accredited institution. The review of those courses/credits would be done by the appropriate staff member for comparable curriculum.

The transferability of credits was one of my greatest concern when I was a transfer student myself. It is important to understand your institution's policies and procedures for accepting transferred credits. Even though it may be time consuming it is extremely important to be thorough, and detailed when explaining transferability of credits, either as a transfer student into or out of the institution. You will find that taking the time to explain the transfer policy, in detail, will help you be more efficient, and successful when assisting, and educating students, and parents. Being transparent, and ethical will help increase your efficiency as an Admission representative or Agent. And in the end, student will appreciate your hard work.

It is always up to the receiving institution as to whether credits will be accepted or not. We always ask why that would be a concern for them to make sure our program is actually the right fit for them and them. We would also tell them to check with the other institution they are looking at and see what they say.It is not a blight on your school and they would go through the same thing from a community college to a state university.

This is one area where it is hard to get students to understand what it means to say the accepting institution makes the final decision. They always want us to tell them that if they attend here they can transfer wherever they want. When you tell them it might not be possible they see that as a blight on your school, versus realizing that is the school's decision and their choice. We can not make that promise so they'll have to do their own research, which they don't like to have to do.

Dequan,
It isn't about accreditation, but whether the credits are comparable to those credits seeking transfer.

Rebecca,
Since not all institutions are accredited, it still goes back to the determination of the school on whether they will accept credits from other schools. It is what the curriculum was and was it comparable to what the current offering is.

Dequan,
The responsibility is that of the student to find out whether or not transfer credits are accepted at the institution of their choice.
