Life Experience Credit

Are there alot of institutions that accept Life Experence Credit?

Mildred,
How does your school determine their life experience is truly equivalent? Do they take a competency exam?

Patty Aronoff

Keisha ,

The question remains is the life experience truly equivalent to the course of study? Many people in academia would argue that they are not.

Patty Aronoff

John,
life experience credits are unique and most institutions stay away from them. If you accept the credits, you are stating they are equivalent to your course of study.

The institution I work for used to offer Life Learning Credit but now only offers it one program. I think it sucks because with the economy being the way it is people who have been at their jobs for years with out degrees have the knowledge and arent getting the credit they deserve.

Im glad at least one program does still have CPL.

Not many institutions offer Life Experience Credits. I think it is a wonderful options offered to our students. Our programs are geared toward working adults, most of them have a lot of experience in their field. As a result of the kind of students we service, it is a major benefit for them knowing they can save time and money by using their life experience.

It seems to me that life experience credit is unique and may apply in an educational setting that is more rare. For instance, Evergreen State University in Olympia, WA, accepts certain semester long courses taught by NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) if the skills are recognized as a specific skill. An example would be learning how to sail or rock climb. But, usually academic credit is unique to an institutionalized system of learning.

DAYANES,
Interesting! Thank you for sharing your school's policy.

I'm very happy that my institution does offer the life experience credit. This is great ... they way it works is the following:
Students need to take a class in where they get to develop a porfolio. This is a 3 credi course that serve them as an elective. When they finish this course they present their porfolio to a pannel of expert and then they provide them with sertain number of credits according to the pannel's judgement. The maximum amount of credit is 15. This equals to 5 classes... I think is great life experience does count and count a LOT

Kathy,

It is very important the the life credits equate to the academic learning they would receive from your institution.

LATOSHA,

Actually, no. Most educational institutions believe life does not equate to academic credit.

Working learners typically have several opportunities during their careers for college level training. Life experience credit allows them to apply the valuable skills their have already acquired.
