I was told that you must become accredited in order to obtain a .edu website... is this true? Can someone tell me what the requirements are to getting a .edu website domain instead of a .com?
Francesca,
Many schools have a URL that ends in .com it all depends upon what is available and the type of business when purchasing a domain name.

I'm interested in this as well. My school is accredited but our website ends in .com
Suzy and Patty,
I was also told that nowadays an institution to get the “edu†domain needed to be accredited. However, I will definitely check on the requirements now.
Antwan,
Agreed! .edu is saying that your business is education. It will also affect when people do searches on the Internet.

I am unsure of how to obtain it, but I would believe that it would be as contacting you domain provider. Having a .edu adds and lends to the credibility of your institution.
I know you are able to get your actual email address changed to .edu if you go through google mail for your school. Having a .edu at the end of your email address helps when sending out email blasts and also when you have to send a important email to a student so it will not go into spam/trash.
Margaret,
You will need to check with the sites that sell domain names and what their specific requirements are.
Patty Aronoff
Don't know anything about obtaining an edu. website. I would be interested in knowing also.
Suzy,
The .edu websites indicate an educational institution. You would need to find out the requirements when applying for a domain.

I believe that you are correct but am not sure.. Can someone knowledgeable please chime in..
