Workforce information for the prospect student
It is extremely important to have current information regarding the employment possibilities a student has after graduation if they enroll in a given program. Our institution has a document that gathers retention and placement, among information for every program to inform students, prospects and the general public, so I think we are on the right track. In the admissions office we need to be aware that we need to give this information to the prospective student every time to help them make an informed decision.
Thomas,
Everyone wins when a student is placed. The statistics show the success and stability of your school.

How well your students market themselves is also a reflection on your programs quality. Having high placement statistics is a confirmation that what you are doing is effective and should be advertised to prospective students.
Victoria,
Your post has hit the mark. Even though they are acquiring knowledge at your school, they need to also learn how to market themselves in their career.

Roberto,
I am a believer that the first day of school should also be the first day preparation for their next job. Work ethics start with their approach to school. As educators, we should be including professionalism every step of the way. In the end, they are a product of our institution. What image do we want portrayed?

This is a very important issue for admissions to be well informed about. In our institution they have an specific and mandatory class in which Career Services and Job placement give the students information not only on job and employers but on resume writing, personal presentation, professional attire and interview role playing. I had the opportunity to seat in one of this classes and was very impressed by the amount of useful information that was passed on to the students. No wonder our job placement rates are in the 80%'s!
Information is important and accessibility to the career services department is even more important but there in an ingredient that, I think, is of the outmost importance and that is that many of our students may be applying for employment for the first time. Hence, the question, are our graduates prepared for their interviews and if so, do they have any idea of ethics and etiquette to follow once in a professional setting? Do they know how to dress the part?
Once I start thinking along these lines I wonder if maybe our core courses should have these topics covered depending on the major. I’m talking about the kind of information that can only come from experience. While I am sure that some teachers make a point of communicating these types of facts to their classes; if we are considering what is best for the student, wouldn’t giving them this information and then training them for success make an even bigger difference?
Leila,
The prospective student needs to have all the information to make an informed decision.

Rhonda,
Having an 80% placement rate iris outstanding. It shows your school is working hard for your graduates.

That's so important for future students Rhonda. I think is great we are able to contribute to the transformation of someone's life through the information we give them!
