Accredited
How many accreditations can one institution actually have?
Ludie ,
Many people confuse licensure and accreditation. Licensure is mandatory, accreditation is voluntary.

I tought that accreditation was a recomandation. It surprises me to find out that instead licensures are a must have.
Lance,
Many students use the same philosophy. A word of caution, though, as there are many bogus "accrediting" agencies out there. USDOE regulates the real deal.

Hamlet,
It depends upon the school and its program offerings. Accreditation is expensive to obtain as well as maintain.

I completely agree. While from a business perspective, accreditation allows for more financial growth within the institution, ultimately accreditation is more of an academic measure of the skills and qualifications of students measured under the accrediting institution's requirements and expectations.
I mean, anyone can open a school and claim they teach particular curriculums, but by what measure is there competence measured? Accrediation institutes act as a third party watchdog to make sure that schools live up to the expectations they claim.
I personally would be very wary of attending any school that is not accredited.
I think any institution wishing to provide quality training/education should be accredited; both for the financial assistance is affords it's students and to strive for a standard of performance. In the minds of our prospective students, acreditation = credible, and in admissions credibility is essential to enrolling a student.
Elmer,
Many schools do not seek accreditation. The schools that wish to offer federal financial aid must be accredited. It is very costly to obtain and maintain accreditation.

I find it surprising that institutions do not need to be accredited. What type of institutions typically have a license but no accreditation?
Andrea,
They can have several. Accreditation s come as institutional and programmatic.
