Life Experience Credit

What is the process like in determining whether life experience will be approved for course credit? What kind of standards do admissions representatives hold in making these decisions?

Edwina ,

Many schools stay away from life credit. It is difficult to equalize life experience with academic experience.

I agree; I think this would be difficult to judge. It seems like it would be hard to form objective requirements for life credit.

I am not familiar with this type of credit and I would think it varies from institution to institution.

Andrew,

It is a difficult topic for discussion as there are many thoughts on the matter. Do what is right for your school.

I feel that life experience credits can be a very difficult topic because there has to be a strict guideline that must be followed to receive those credits. It is difficult to look at a student and tell them that what they accomplished in life is not worth considering.

Kristin,
My fit experience credit is also determined by the institution offering the program. It is determined based on whether or not you will allow to give them credit for a life experience the equals the information that they would be receiving as a student.

In my opinion, where I am strictly a small school offering business applications primarily to get the unemployed the skills they need to get back into the workforce. MS Office and Quickbooks being the forefront of the trainings I offer. Life experience can play a roll if I am working with someone who has had office experience but has been laid off and they are looking to increase their skills to become more up to date on current business applications. However, the roll it plays is that it only determines whether or not the student will be a good candidate for the class and have a basic skill level prior to starting the program. i.e. If they are used to MS Office 2003 - our classes now offer the MS Office program in 2013 - so they have the basic knowledge but need to be trained on the updated version of Office.

Kiara,
The answer to your question would be determined by the policy and procedure of your institution. This is usually determined between the registrar and the academic department.
