Admissions Counselor
If a person holds a Master degree in Mental Health or related field, but this person is not license. Could he/she still be call Counselor?
Maricelly,
Agreed! That's the purpose of the commissions desire not to use the term counselor.
Patty Aronoff
IN MY OPINION IF THE PERSON WORKS IN THE ADMISSION DEPARTMENT, THERE IS NO WAY THAT CAN BE CALLED COUNSELOR EVEN IF THEY HAVE STUDIES IN THIS AREA. I HAVE CO-WORKERS THAT HAVE A DEGREE IN COUNSELING BUT ARE WORKING IN THE ADMISSION DEPARTMENT AND THEIR TITLE IS INTEGRATED SERVICES OFFICIAL.
VIANKA,
The commission strictly forbids the use of counselor in admissions. Even if they held the credentialing as a counselor in the role in admissions they would not apply.
Patty Aronoff
It depends upon which field they are practicing
Alex,
No, the Commission prohibits the use of the terms counselor or advisor.
Patty Aronoff
Can you use the term advisor?
Christopher,
Correct! Counselor is a term that is not allowed for use by the commission.
Patty Aronoff
Counselors are lincesed professionals--admissions personels are not!
Ryan,
You are correct. This term is one that the commission is adamant not be used in admissions. It does provides a different connotation.
Patty Aronoff
Hi Patty,
I find this very interesting. I have worked in states, and at institutions, where the term Counselor was used almost exclusively for Admissions Representatives.
However, I am currently pursuing a Masters degree in clinical and mental health counseling and we have often discussed the overuse of the term. While it may be subtle, the implication is that a Counselor is a qualified, helping agent that is licensed. Yet, unfortunately, because this term is so often overused, I think it provides a false sense of security. While Admissions Representatives should be first and foremost, honest and ethical, that is not always the case. However, if an Admissions Rep is found not to be, they will likely lose their job, but they will not lose their license, which could very well happen to a "Counselor".
Gabriela ,
No committee required. It is stated in rule and thus is part of these regulations that schools are to follow. If a school knowingly uses the term counselor against rule than they are in violation. There can be sanctions.
Patty Aronoff
Elery,
It is stated in rule. The current commission for independent education does not allow the use of the term counselor.
Patty Aronoff
Is there a committe that regulates the use of this terminology? Im sure that the University and or Institution goes through acrediitation processes,is this monitored?
This is something that is really important for the University's to know.
Elery,
Absolutely! If you are using the term counselor knowingly, then you are violating the rules knowingly.
Patty Aronoff
This is interesting, because if the department still uses 'counselor' than the school needs to rectify this and use 'representative'?
DAYANES,
It depends upon which field they are practicing. It is similar to someone who has a juris doctorate. If they have not been admitted to the bar, they cannot call themselves an attorney.
