Common Mistakes
What are some of the most common mistakes that representatives generally make when first starting out?
Cassandra,
What you said makes complete sense, however, I'd like to hear your thoughts on my response as well. You said that it is human nature to make judgements and anticpate, and yes, parts of our lives teach us that this is wrong. However, how are we suppose to be able to put ourselves in student's shoes and attempt to understand what they're feeling/ thinking without anticipation and professional judgement being a possitive tool? Do you believe that there is a balance?
I think some common mistakes representatives generally make when first starting out include not going deep enough in conversation to get to the core reasons the potential student wants to attend college and what the end benefit is. I am learning every day from my experienced coworkers and also from applying the training I have received. It is a process and every interview is unique to the student.
Kathryn,
I completely agree with you. I see the reps at my school (I just started here) making judgements about students before them come in to visit. I did the same thing in a previous sales job I had after I had been there a few years. I think that it is human nature. However, just because it is our nature, does not mean that we should continue to do it. In order to be the most successful we can be, we can not make judgements or have ideas about the students and their future goals.
I believe that some common mistakes that reps make when starting out is their confidence level. I know I have to be more assertive in my process. I also feel that sometimes we misjudge the students who come in. We may have a preconceived idea that they may or may not enroll and we need to stop doing that. We need to look at every potential student as an open book whose pages we get to help write.
