Refunds on Books
There are updates to textbooks that render previous versions useless. There could be a case wherein a student seeks a refund on an unused book, yet the semester has begun and the book is going to be updated before the next time the course is offered. Since it is too late for another student to have the need for that edition, will the student receive a refund?
Text books are expensive and I believe stongly that those costs should be kept to a minimum to continue to keep school affordable. Also, if a school is able to reuse the text book, then a buy-back program should be implemented. It also saves trees.
I too have all of my text books from school and use some for reference on a regular basis.
If a student has not marked in the book, then a refund should be given.
I still have most of my books from college that they wouldn't take back. I actually use them still as references, I have found them to be very useful since school.
I know that I have had problems returning books in the past because they are outdated or because of professor's not renewing their list of books they will be using.
Here we only accept books back if they have not been opened. I understand why, but it can be tough because many students open their books but they keep them in great condition and we won't take them back.
I would buy used books at the University I attended, and when i would sell them back my institution already had an updated volume. They didnt buy my books back either
It would be great if schools could buy back every book after finishing with the book. But, if they can't use the book in the next semester the school has no need to purchase it back.
It is terrible that you spend all that money on books and they won't buy them back. When I was in college they hardly ever bought back my books.
Books should be taken back bye the schools upon completion in my opinion. If the schools are not going to be providing refunds, I believe they should be informing the students early that they will not be in position to be recieving a refund for used books. The info can't be that outdated in my opinion and this really speaks to an area of communication integrity.
Richard,
Refunds for books, fees, and supplies are addressed in Ohio Administrative Code section 3332-1-10.1. Generally, if a student returns any book or other supply item in "like new" condition and the school can re-use the item, the student should be given a refund. In your example, it appears that the book cannot be re-used by the school since they are using a newer edition so a refund would not be required by the rule.
