As a new hire there is alot of information to be gained
I agree! When I was a going through college I never had the chance to deal with an employee that knew the handbook like I have come to understand Admission Reps need to. I think that each school should require its employees to know and understand the catalog and to know the key points in each catalog to better assist the students in finding the information. At the institute I am currently working we are required to understand the catalog and I have been flagging the specific sections that I feel students will inquire about, and I expect this to be updated as I actually meet with students and speak with them about what they want to know. I think if you were to have specific pages memorized it would really help you to show the student you do truely care and you are there to help them.
You are right. The school catalog also keeps the student on the right pathway. It gives them the rules to play by, The time needed to complete and the knowledge needed to see the outcome of the pathway
Exactly! I've also found that the catalog provides the student with a sense of excitment about the journey they're starting.
The course catalogs are the easiest way to explain the courses themselves and the way the program is set up at my school. I really like using it as a guide for my prospective students right off the bat in the meetings.
This is very true. The majority, if not all schools now have online catalogs. Therefore, it is important for admissions rep's to stay updated on the changes with all the school's catalog's.
I feel it is very important to understand everything in your student catalog.
It can walk both the admissions rep & student thru the process in an organized manner & helps avoid missteps.
School Catalogs are extremely helpful! I remember going through mine frequently when trying to decide on which class would be the right fit for both myself and my major.
Glen,
This sounds like a great resource and tool for the students.

Our school's catalog is called an Orientation Handbook. It offers critical information for the new student regarding policies and procedures and guidelines for how to study along with grading criteria. It includes a history of the school and photos of the inside and outside. It also provides photos of the staff and all of the instructors showing where they work. This provides credibility and personalizes the school.
It also includes a personalized planner with recommended time frames to help the students set their own deadlines in order to structure their progress. It's the first item I explain after finishing the enrollment forms.
It's extremely helpful to have this!
Be aware too that there may from time to time be addenda printed for the catalog for which you need copies. these are typically done between major revisions of the catalog.
As a new admissions agent - I personally found the school catalog very informative!!
School Catalogs have tons of information so it's very important to know this information and have it accessible.
I agree, the catalog is very detailed and provides a wealth of information.
I have found through my years of employment in admissions that it is very important to knoow all policy and procedures in the student catalog
School Catalogs are not only a great marketing tool for us as they list all our current course offerings, promotions, etc but they also list all of our policies and procedures. It is great to have this all inclusive tool to send to potential students.
I found the information covered in this section to be helpful.
Yes, at our school students receive all the information they need about the programs and campus life in the school catalog. This helps prospective students to feel that they trust the school because the information is more readily available.
The amount of "good" information you can get from the school catalog is amazing!
