Discounting

It is amazing how many families expect to have their tuition discounted if they pay in cash. Some schools actually did this.

I am not shocked by schools offering discounts. It seems like something that could be done...Until you read the rules and regulations. It is obviously not fair and does not provide all students with the same opportunities. I understand that everyone wants enrollment rates to rise, but giving each student an equal chance is something that must not be tampered with.

Excellent point Jason. The reason why discounts are not offered for cash payments or for family members is to make it fair for all enrolling students.

I can imagine why some people think they should receive a discount for cash payments. It is common to see this in almost every area of business. At the same time, I think it's good that everything is uniform in the education sector as to not lead to any discrimination...for any reason.

Jason,

General tuition discounting is prohibited so schools may not use inducements such "$100 off tuition with copy of this ad". However, schools use approved instituition grants to provide tuition assistance to certain qualifiying individuals (such as veterans).

That would be nice, but I think in order to keep a level playing field for all students tuition should be kept uniform. If not, there could be an opportunity for favortism or unfair discrimination to take place.

Was the rule preventing discounting established due to illegal activites, such as "bait-and-switch" approaches?

Has there been any discussion of establishing consistent and 'legal' discounts which would be permitted? All schools would need to abide by the terms established. This approach would meet a consumer expectation that does not seem to be unreasonable.

Jennifer,

Please keep in mind that it may seem like a nice idea to give a discount, doing so would be a violation of the Board's rules.

I agree that if a family demonstrates loyalty to a school then a minor discount of some sort should be consider, i.e. on books, supplies or a waived application fee.

We have had a lot of students come through our program who have sent family or friends and it would be nice to be able to give them a discount.

I can see why people would think they may be granted a discount. However I think it is shocking to read how you mentioned schools actually did. I am sure there were a lot of compliants of those who did not qualify who wanted something in return as well.
