Student "Services"

Student services is a benefit for our student and admissions representatives need to make sure all students are completely aware of all of the services the school offers to help the student throughout their education. A good way to make sure the student understands these services is to introduce them to each department to get a better understanding.

What all do you assist with as a student services coordinator? My school does not have one currently. One thing I wish we had in place, was an online website for available positions for students. To wat extent do you keep in contact with alumi to assist with job placement?

I agree. Student Services is a great resource for students on campus. The students will attain vital and helpful information. I recommend that the students stop in regularly to get to know that staff and catch up on the latest community and school information.

Brenda,

Your school seems to have developed a wonderful plan to assist students with their personal needs so that they can be sucessful in pursuing their education.

Kimberly Stein

Student Services provides the student with the reassurance that we are on their side.

Our student services is remarkable in assisting students with various sources outside of the school; to assist the student in obtaining vouchers for scrubbs through the county if they have children and are receiving any benefits such as medical, food stamps, cash benefits they are able to recieve transportation alloance to come back and forth to school which is $90.00 a month. The needs to present to their caseworker a verification letter and there awards letter from the department of education. There have been students who have been evicted and actually have eviction notices and were able to move into transistional housing because of their financial disposition. We have a list of food pantries based on the geographics of our students. This has helped tremendously with retention. Our retention rate is 75%. Students that woul have dropped because of no support from family members were able to have an outreach of sources to meet their needs at the time. Networking is very important so they know who you are and what you do and you know who they are and their resources and partnership creating productive citizens that are financially secure.

I enjoy providing the students with as much information as possible. I am honest and tell them what we can and cannot do for them. This practice is important for building trust with the students and they appreciate my honesty rather than telling them something that fabricates what we can actually offer.

At our school, student services meet the student when they initially come in for a tour. They also are brought into it again when the student enrolls & signs the contract because at that point, student services are the people most closely working with the students other than the instructors!

During the interview process when I discuss the resources that are available to our students here I always give several examples and key contact personnel for them. In addition, on my tour if key people are available I introduce them to the potential student.

I always try to introduce each student I am with to our Dean of Student Affairs. So they have a face with a name.

I love the role our "services" staff plays on campus. They are informative, helpful and most importantly involved.

If you work at the college that would be really easy to do, but if you work in an online dept that is not so easy, my policy is to inform them fully that student services will be contacting them, and working with them so they have a full understanding of the services offered. We also have an outline of the services that we can go through during the enrollment process.

I am the student services coordinator at my campus and I can say that our role is highly important to the success of the student. At times I think that our school could offer additional activities to the student and that student services would be responsible for organizing the event. Our program is a fast paced nursing program, have you been successful with outside of school events with the students in an accelerated program?

Often at most schools the student services representative will be the first person a student meets and can be extremly useful thourgh out the process to help studetns understand the programs the school may offer.

This is good to introduce the Student Service staff during the tour to give the prospective student the understanding of the resources after graduation!

This can even be done on the original tour of the campus. Showing the student that early on can be a big determining factor for whether or not they believe they will "fit in" on campus.
