Other staff
I have found that our co-workers are a wealth of knowledge for us and the students....there are just some things you do not know, unless you ask!
I agree for the most part! I think it is imperative to ask questions and learn from the experience of others. However I also believe that it is critical to do research and know where to go for information when needed. This is a benefit of creating our Notebooks!
Having open communication is key to the entire organization. I am the newest advisor at our school. Because of this, I was told about plans that the old advisors had not been made aware of yet and I also had fresh training. We do training all the time but sometimes the foundation of what to do escapes seasoned agents. It was nice to see that everyone was willing to hear what I learned. I made suggestions based off my training that was accepted and not ignored. I love that my team members are always here for each other. It helps us all.
I try to keep in contact with all of my program chairs. I have found if you have a good social work relationship they tell you when or if there are any changes to the programs much faster because they are more aware of your need to be kept in the loop.
I find that sitting in a class is helpful as well as information from the teacher's prospective talked about in the Staff lounge. I always encourage students whom I have enrolled to come to me with feedback about their classroom and lab experience, whether something they especially like, or a concern or question which they are not sure how to address. I always assure them that I will take them to the right person or department so that their question gets addressed.
I agree totally! Of course it is good to know as much as I can from each department to convey to my students, but I believe someone from another department is witnessing different things daily that I am not and I feel I always have something to learn from one of them!
