Accreditation

There was a few different types of accreditation titles shown. Ours was not listed there, makes me wonder how many different types of accrediations ohio offers. And can a institution be recgonized from multiple agencys?

Megan ,

School that have a physical presence in Ohio or are actively recruiting Ohio students are under the jurisdiction of our Board. Online schools are subject to regulation by the state they are based out of.

There are several different accrediting bodies, which can be difficult to keep track off.

What gets me, is that there are so many schools (specifically online schools) out there that are not accredited, yet advertise and promote like they are, and unfortunately students get taken advantage of by wasting time and money.

How can this be legal? Is there anything being done about these 'pop' schools that are taking advantage of hard working American's trying to better themselves?

These are very important to students. I dislike the fact that some program will not let you receive full accrediation until a school has graduates in that program.

John, I believe some companies whether federal or private will not accept a particular accredited body and have the right to do so in the hiring of their employees.

Accreditation is a topic that I cover with every student. Even if they decide not to enroll at my university, I want them to ask the right questions at the school they choose. I understand that not every student is a perfect fit at my university, and I give each prospective student all of the facts about our school so they are free to make that determination. I don't assume that every admissions department does the same thing, so I feel like it is my responsiblity to help that prospective student make the right decision.

Accreditation is something that I always discuss with my students. Most students are unaware of what accreditation means and that there at different types. I certainly agree that we do not want to mislead students on this topic.

We definitely don't want to lead students down the wrong path and always should be informative especially when it comes to accrediation.

learning about accrediation is important because some school are not or are not accrediated by a real body so you need to discuss that when speaking about basis with a student

Jody,

There are many different accrediting agencies. Some accrediting agencies approve institutions and programs while some accrediting agencies approve only specific programs. There is information on the US Department of Education's web site that lists all accrediting agencies that are recognized by the US Department of Education. The State of Ohio does not approve accrediting agencies.
