Becoming Familiar with Everything
I have found that it's not easy becoming familiar with EVERYTHING right away that is associated with our school, but as time moves on (and I have been pacing myself) and I attend as many meetings (staff, faculty, department, all-school, orientations, program advisory, off-site workshops and trainings) as possible and familiarize myself with our regulatory and accrediting bodies, as well as our employers and other outside entities, it's becoming easier for me. A helpful support staff and wonderful co-workers has helped immensely too. Does anyone have any other ideas on how I can become more acclimated into my new position/school?
I agree with all your examples of becoming familiar with all aspects of the position. It is challenging but and have to use all resouces on a constant bases.
My 1st week on the job I found it was very helpful to learn as much as I could before I started seeing student so I could master the postion better.
I feel like there are so many steps to all the computer part that I wonder if I will ever become familiar with everything. I think familiarizing myself with the programs, campus, staff etc. will be the easy part.
Oh my gosh, I have been utilizing the internet like crazy. I often look up policies online, use sticky notes and refer to the staff for support. They are a huge help.
I have always found it best to always walk around your school and sit in on any classes so you can see for yourself how a teacher teaches, or how just sit and talk with someone in different departments to understand their job and what they do on a daily basis. Ask how you can help them if any to make you guys work better as a team. I always feel communication is key to full understanding. So just ask questions and observe.
