Credit Transfers from Institution to Institution

What cases have you found where credits from one institution to another have NOT transferred? What role do out of state students and institutions play in the transferring of credits?

In regards to credit transfers, I have noticed that when the student saves their course syllabus it can help. A student attempted to transfer classes and was told nothing would transfer but they fought for it and had every copy of their course syllabus and got some transferred. This is not guaranteed, but could be a good place to start. Also, tell students to get transfer of credits in writing.

I have found that you can never guarantee that credits will transfer. When students want to transfer their credits to another school it is up to that receiving institution to evaluate the credits.

It is solely up to the receiving institution whether they will accept the transfer credits.

I've also ran across situations where the credits actually transferred in, just not as the same exact class.

EX: ENG102 transferred in as ARTSHUM1

In transferring credits from nationally accredited to regionally accredited schools, credits may often not transfer. Out of state schools and students have the responsibility of knowing and reporting what credits may transfer and under what circumstances

Katie,
There are many reasons credits may not transfer from school to school. The primary reason is difference in course content but other reasons may also be stated such as differences in accreditation or the length of time that has elasped since the credits were earned. Going from one state to another may also effect transfer of credit as some states have a system in place for recognizing in-state credit trasnfers that would not apply to out-of-state schools.

I have found that courses do not transfer from one institution to another because the course content is not equivalent or substantially similar or the credits at the sending school are short of the receiving school. I have not experienced any out of state issues.

I have experienced when a student's credits did not transfer from an institution to ours but those cases usually do not effect the student's decision to go to school or not. Out of state student's transferring their credits have not been an issue for me. It is more so due to the comparison of classes that would not allow the credits to be transferred.
