We also tell them upfront. If a refund check is all they are looking for then they arent in it for the right reasons anyway

We just tell them up front that we don't offer them. We then ask them that if a refund check is the only reason that they want to attend school to test their committment.

Making sure the students discuss thier loan options with a finaid advisor and making sure they understand the differences between subsidized and unsubsidized loans v. grants. The student needs to realize they are here for education and not to get free money.

FA explains to them how FA funds are applied. I discuss this with them after they have met FA. Many students talk about "free money" and think that they are not held responsible. I am sorry to say this, bu I feel that this idea comes from the public side.

Encourage the student to remember why they are coming to school to continue their education for a better future

I do not know if we necessarily overcome the issue but we do address it before enrollment if the students tells us from the beginning that is what they are looking for. First we make sure to tell them it would be a loan and not "free money" as I have heard some students refer to it. We also tell the student that we have set up our financial aid to cover the cost of the program aned books in order to keep the student from getting into more debt than is necessary. If they persist we will address their true motivations in going to school.
