Texting.
So many students today deem it necessary to text in their very expensive and important- to their success in their education classes. How about the U. S. Dept. of Education making it a rule for ALL Title IV schools to prohibit texting during class. How rude to the teacher and fellow students. We don't permit in movies or church among other events, why not school? Maybe this is partly why the U.S. ranks 26th in the world in math & science!
I think texting and cell phone usage sometimes gets out of control. everyone has an excuse that they need it. A fellow co-worker has implemented text trivia in one of her classes, other than that they must be turned off.
This issue of texting is becoming more difficult to manage all the time. I admire what one of my coworkers has implemented in her classroom...she collects their phones as they enter the room. They get them back when they leave. I may have to resort to this.
The concern for texting could be: 1. distruptive. 2)cheating 3) unprofessional. 4)focusing properly in the class.
I do not think texting should be allowed in the classrooms. It takes away from the students attention to the lecture. The instuctors give breaks. Those break time should be used for texting or making calls if necessary.
We have the same policies regarding cell phone usage in the classroom. The instructors are responsible for classroom management. If there is abuse in the classroom, the instructor may need coaching on how to enforce the rules.
Our school prohibits the use of cell phones in the classroom as part of our student standards of excellence. This policy is made known to students at their admission appointment, at their orientation, and the 1st day of each class. They also sign off on receipt of the rules in their student handbook. Instructors are responsible for enforcing the rules. Students are required to leave class to use the phone and are only allowed to do so in emergency circumstances.
