diploma mills
Diploma mills are a really issue for society. There needs to be information available that tells when a school is legit or not. There are many students that come in to our school who went to diploma mills and are not even aware of it.
This is a very scary reality today with so many online programs. I am stunned by how many people never have to leave their homes and can obtain an education. I do agree that there should be more information available that points out the schools that are not legitimate and are nothing but diploma mills. It will make me think more and investigate if I choose to further my education online in the future.
A very interesting topic and one that is discussed in our leadership courses in the PN & ADN programs. Not only are students scammed if the school closes prior to receiving a "so called" degree, but the student cannot get a job or further their education with said transcripts/degree. These programs ruin the integrity of nursing in regards to establishment as a serious, professional entity. Because there are so many types of programs, nursing is not taken as serious as it should be, is disjointed, and has not established themselves well in the health care field, with well established criteria and program of study expectations.
Too many students are victimized by the diploma mills.
The old Adage should always apply if it sounds to good than it probably is. It is sad that the student is the one got up in it in the end. People should always ask if something is legit especially if it sounds just to good.
I talk with 2-3 folks a week who have been hoodwinked by the diploma mills. Your heart goes out to them.
In regards to dimploma mills we have a list of schools that are not approved or qualified to start post secondary schooling.. what i would like to know is what is the proper verbage to explain to a student who attended one of these mills that we can not accept their diploma with out defacing or bashing the institution they attended. Any feedback would be accepted!
I agree there should be something in place to make people more aware of this problem.
It is a shame that diploma mills are set up in the first place, robbing someone of achieving a valuable education. However, students need to be aware and cautious and do their research on every and any schools they are applying to. If it sounds too good to be true, it is.
It's crazy to me that diploma mills still exist. I agree completely that there should be some kind of nationwide list letting people know if the school is a diploma mill or not.
I agree Erin. I have had to tell many students that what they are so proud of accomplishing means nothing. Some of these students have left angry at me and have never returned. Most students who receive this news are still commited to their education and get their GED and are able to start school.
When speaking to a perspective student that has not completed their high school diploma and they opted to get a diploma that ends up not being legitimate is a very painful situation. People need to be made aware of how important it is to research first.
Recently, there have been alot of schools I have researched that I want to know more about that do not give out alot of information. It is always good to know what is out there and to be informative even though I am not able to give out information to students but for me personally.
I totally agree! Diploma mills should be illegal.
We declined many people due to their High school diploma being unacceptable. The problem is that many of our applicants not making educated decision by choosing these schools. Diploma mills make it very appealing and nobody even bother to make a research about the school.
Its always heartbreaking to tell a student we do not accept their diploma. Many of these students go through the process get excited to start school only to realize that their diploma is not accepted anywhere. We actually give them steps to sign up for GED program near them so that they can achieve their goals
A lot of students get wrapped up in these Diploma Mill schools. It's always best to stay local and go on location for GED testing and anytime a student refers a friend or family member I always give them local info for testing feeling I did my part to help spread the word and help them get on the correct path.
Diploma mills are a hot mess. I feel bad for the students who went that route. Most of our students just end up getting their Ohio GED.
That is why it is so important that schools do their homework to make sure that prospective students have the appropriate diploma information at enrollment. It is the responsibility of an institution to make sure this violation does not occur. I know of serious consequences to schools who have not minded the law on this matter.
"If it seems to good to be true, it probably is" High schools need to address this with their graduates.
