From a Personal Perspective
Do you believe that fostering an ethical and compliance culture affects your professional relationships in the classroom or lab? If so, how?
It builds trust and respect. A classroom with a trusting and respectful atmosphere is crucial for student success.
Without a doubt. If the students trust you and believe that you are an ethical person and live by high standards, they can look to that as a role model. This leads to trust by the student, which makes you more approachable for difficulties in or out of the classroom. In the end, it makes for a better student and a better classroom.
I do believe this affects my professional relationships in the classroom. By doing so, I am able to show them that me being their instructor is not just a job, but a desire to show others the passion and professionalism that I have for my career. I have to lead by example, if I want them to be professional and considerate to me, but more importantly to the those future colleagues.
Fostering an ethical and compliance culture positively affects my professional relationships in the classroom and lab because using common sense during any particular situation and treating students, and other members of staff, with respect speaks volumes. If I foster an ethical and compliance culture, students will likely follow suit. Thus, building their own personal, professional relationships with faculty and fellow classmates.
Christopher,
And as you note... "Because of choice..." That says it all! :-)

This culture helps build and maintain credibility with students as a professional who truly cares about the students and their futures and is not treating their position as a simple 40hr per week job. Compliance with ethical standards because of choice demonstrates commitment by the instructor and sets and example for the student for their future behavior in their chosen profession.
