I am quite comfortable contingency planning with them. Student-prospects are very receptive when we tell them about other programs that fit their needs at other schools. We do not have any Cosmetology or Xray tech programs at my school, so we will tell them the top programs for these locally. Sometimes these student-prospects will come back to us for other programs or in the case of the Xray tech, they may do some preliminary medical terminology classes through us.

Monica, What a great perspective. What are benefits that can come from helping a student reach their goals?

Until now I have not seen the relevance of discussing options that do not apply to us. After this course I can see the importance in discussing all options available.

Until now, I did not think that covering options that do not apply to us had any relevance. I now see the importance and benefit in doing so.

Amanda, Agreed. Excellent point! Keep it up!

I think ethically it is my job to inform a student of all of their options including attending a school that may be a better fit. Hopefully they will always remember my honesty and still refer other people to my school.

I am very comfortable with exploring all options with a prospective student. Students who enroll at institutions that may not be the best fit tend to have a higher attrition rate and they may decide to leave later in their program. I would much rather know that I have acted in the best interest of the student throughout my relationship with them.

I definitely think that exploring all of the options is important when talking to the student. What might be right for one, it might not be for others. In the school I work for, all of the programs are accelerated and it is not for everybody. It is very important that student understand that before starting the registration process.

I believe it's important to understand where the student is coming from. It is not beneficial for both the student and the school to have a student enroll into a program that they are not qualified for. This is where incomplete students come in. It is better to have a student find what is right for them, even if it means going somewhere else.

Tammy, Very true. What kind of reflection do you feel it puts on your institution as a whole?
Dr. Jean Norris

I think going over all of their options including not coming to your school validates that you really care.

Humberto,
That is so great. Keep up the good work!

I take pride in helping the students, and guide them in what is best for them

We believe that transparency is always the best approach and that it benefits all partied involved. Allowing the prospective student to understand all of their options helps them to make the most informed decision. Can you provide an example of this type of conversation?

Dr. Jean Norris

I tell my students there are other local schools up front because I want them to make the right choice for themselves.

Breanne,
It's important to be a resource as a prospective student goes through their decision making process. Any thoughts on how you can help them beyond just being there for answers if they have questions though?

Dr. Jean Norris

I always make sure to follow up with my student to see how his/hers decision process is going and if they need further assistance I am always there to help them in any way.

It sounds like you have a student-focused approach that ultimately helps the student succeed, even if it means they need to go to a different school. Think about the positive impact that has and the opportunity for referrals!

Dr. Jean Norris

We has referral student from formal students and sometime we have to refer them to other school because the transportation. They live 2 to 4 hrs away from our school. I told them I will share any experience if they need me too.

Very well said Huichi. I think this concept has been difficult for many people to accept but to your point, if they aren't meant to be there they will eventually drop out and that impacts your institution. How do you help your students consider all of the options to determine if your school is the right fit?
