Cost concerns/Financial Aid

What do you do when a student asks if they will qualify for financial aid and if so how much they can receive?

I let the student know that we can sit them down with Financial Aid and that they will be able to answer that question for them.

I address their concern and refer them to a Financial Aid Representative.

Cecilia,

Thank you for posting! We agree it's best to let the experts in FA provide the detailed financial aid information to the student.

Since we do offer Financial Aid I ensure the prospective student knows that we have Financial Aid for those who qualify and they will be meeting with a Financial Aid representative to receive the detailed information. Once we complete the initial career consultation, I walk them to the Financial Aid department which then they will meet with the FA rep and obtained the information they are seeking in reference to their financial aid status.

Thank you for sharing, Maria. Leaving the FA questions to Financial Aid is a great suggestion!

I AGREE, THEY ARE RIGHT PERSON

Christopher,
That's a very good way to go. Think of ways to assist the financial aid office in addressing the students concern when times comes. How can you make that transition smoother?

Dr. Jean Norris

I would address their concern and tell them that the financial aid office is the subject matter expert in that area.

That's a great plan Mickie. Leave the financial conversations with the experts.

I will always refer them to our financial services department and tell them that they are the experts and since information can change I want to ensure they are getting the correct information

Marcus, great point. Keep up the great work.

Curtis, that's a great point. We have unfortunately seen too many people get in trouble for saying something when the best person to handle those questions is FA. We aren't hiding anything...we just want them to get the most accurate information.

If a student asks if they will recieve FA and how much, I would explain the FA application procees. Following that I would put them in touch with their financial aid representative. Its usually best to leave those types of specifics to their appointed rep.

I never give financial aid advice when it comes to their awards. I explain that I would like to put them in touch with a financial aid expert and set up an appointment for them.

Since I am not a financial aid expert, I first acknowledge their concern and let them know they're not the first person to be concerned about cost. I let them know how to apply for financial aid and give them contact information for a financial aid advisor at our school.

I tell them their qualification are situational and circumstancial, that they will need to apply and see what their award is.

Leaving the financial aid question to the FA professionals is a great plan!

I always refer them to a Financial Aid Advisor with financial aid questions.

Guilyne, sure. Allowing the student to meet with Financial Aid helps address some of those concerns and also shows that you are listening to what they need.
