Nicole, Interesting! So how does this relate to your generational style?
Dr. Jean Norris

I learn best by hands on, whether that is writing out notes while studying or learning programs but doing it myself.

Nikeline, Interesting! It's great that you are so aware of your personal behaviors. What did these results help you to see about yourself?
Dr. Jean Norris

I also learn best by watching a demonstration, but I also need to do a little reseach also. I am also a Baby Boomer and Gen X. I enjoy feedback positive or not, because that helps you grow, and I can work independently, or as a group.

trang,
Thanks for your post! I'm curious what you do in situations where you can't see to learn though. What if someone is just talking to you?

Dr. Jean Norris

i like watching physically to learn. i am a visual learner.

Thelma, Reading external resources and listening to lectures are a great way to learn, even if you have some difficulty with computers (don't we all at times?). How will you use this awareness to connect with your students?
Dr. Jean Norris

I learn best by reading resource material on a subject as well as lecture. I am a babyboomer and still a little technically challenged when it comes to the internet.

timothy,
Wow you are imaginative! Thank you for the "visual" description. Great job.
Dr. Jean Norris

the classical way. It was the way I was brain washed as a student...teacher, chaulk board , notes ,lecture, study, read it again... test. Later in grad school we added the seminar where we got to hear others ideas threw critical discussion.

I did not grow up with the internet and it's immediate access to info and tons of it. I call it the idiot box(google) and the idiot key(return) and the resulting vomit of info produced. The vomit contains the best answer somewhere(cost/benefit). I call it the RIGHT answer.

I am a hybrid x'er/millenial

Connie,
Great awareness! Thank you for sharing in the forum.

Dr. Jean Norris

I believe that it is a combination of of two generational learning styles, Generation X and Baby Boomers. I think that this is probably because of my age (1956) and having children in their mid 30's. I was introduced to computers, emails, texting , and their ways of communication.

Connie,
Very interesting! How does this match with generational learning styles?

Dr. Jean Norris

I learn best by visualizing with word association. If an instructor can explain something to me and relate it to an object, sound, sight, feel and taste, I can comprehend it immediately. I also like to learn with lecture and afterwards applying books to understand in more detail.

Kathryn,
That is so interesting! How do you feel this specifically helps you to learn?

Dr. Jean Norris

I definitely learned most of my work ethic from my father, a baby boomer, I embody his work style, and communication style the same way, tho I'm a gen Xer - who knew til I took the quiz!

It looks like you have found the best way for you to learn and retain information, that's terrific awareness Katherine.

Dr. Jean Norris

An effective way that I use to learn is to not simply revise the notes taken, but to write them all down again, or even three times. This approach ensures that I thoroughly analyze the information multiple times.

Michel,
Wow! These are all great insights into your personal preferences. Given you are very clear on this...how do you effectively deal with others who are different?

Dr. Jean Norris

My learning style embraces the generation x style. I considered myself as competent with technology, having a distaste for “touchy feely” teaching methods, and reality driven. I really like to see how will a class help me in the real world. Furthermore, I share even more characteristics with the generation x such as loyalty to individuals and not to organizations, and intolerance dealing with bureaucracy. Also, I appreciate and considered freedom as the best reward in the world. Unlike the typically idealistic Baby Boomers, I tend to be skeptical.
