Effective Teams

Think about a group you are currently working with. Which characteristics for effective teams are present? What is lacking?

I agree with Monique as we work on the same team. In addition to what she mentioned I believe that our leadership has done a great job "setting the stage" for our team. I think that we have a shared goal and everyone has a commitment to that goal. The team that has been assembled works hard to maintain the 4 areas required for group trust. This can be difficult with a large team and there is always room for improvement, but it can work.

@jean  I am extremely fortunate to work with an amazing, well-rounded team of individuals who share a common goal.  It is fascinating that with so many persoanalities, and different strengths, that we can all achieve success at the same task is so many different ways.  I believe teams benefit from spending time getting to know each other and sharing ideas and success stories.  I have learned so much about how to be successful at my job by listening to the way others have handled challenges.  It inspires me to think outside of my own assumptions, and encourages me that I have a resource for collaboration if I am stuck.

Common goals are a key element in reaching positive results.

I am always working in a team in my comapny. We are all here to help and push our students to be successful. We have our problems sometimes but who doesnt! We all for the most part love our jobs and that makes our team run alot smoother.

Michael, What is something that you can do to initiate a common goal?
Dr. Jean Norris

The group I currently am working with has not set a common goal to acheive. Once this is acheived, I feel then we can allocate resources and roles appropriately.

timothy, Interesting! What can you do to remedy what is lacking on your team?
Dr. Jean Norris

a characteristic that is present in the "team".

open honest communication.

well, I would say goals are absent, unless you consider more as a goal.

another I believe which is absent are clear processes as well as trust.

Rachel,
Great awareness! Thank you for sharing.

Henry,
How do you think you can help shape your team? What role do you play?

Dr. Jean Norris

My team is the admissions. The characteristics for effective team is that we are action oriented and there are shapers, completers and implementers however an area of opportunity is trust.

My group has many shapers and coordinatorss but not enough team players and or specialist.

SUHEILY,
Great insight. In what ways specifically will you work on improving your roles and department?

Dr. Jean Norris

I AM VERY PROUD OF ME TEAMWORK BECAUSE AFTER SEE THE DIFFERENT CHARACTERISTIC FOR AN EFFECTIVE TEAM WE ARE GOING TO THE CORRECT DIRECTION. WE NEED TO IMPROVE IN THE AREA TO DEFINE THE ROLES. BECAUSE WE NEED TO HAVE A EFECTIVE PROCESS TO ACHIEVE OUR GOALS.

Janet,
So now that you are aware of this...what is the next step to help your team?

Dr. Jean Norris

I think we are lacking of resource\investigators. Today's global market offers many opportunities and extensive resources that could helps us to grow and improve greatly.

Kathryn,
Sounds like your team is using some characteristics of effective teams. What is a characteristic that is missing that you think would benefit?

Dr. Jean Norris

reliability is a must, if even one member is not pulling his/her weight, that creates resentment, and thus the congruence suffers. It is important to outline the expectations early, explain the eval. system, and give feedback, even if corrective.

The follow up email is a great practice Natasa. I know I certainly appreciate when I receive a summary email after a meeting to make sure we are all on the same page. Thank you for sharing!
