So it looks like you're modeling a positive attitude and building rapport; that's a great approach! How does that impact your communication with them?
Having a good attitude and stopping by to say hi even when you don't need something from them.
Annette,
Wow! You've packed a lot of great tips in just a few sentences. Overall, what I hear you saying is to consider the receiver (other person) in the communication to have a more meaningful interaction and that...is a choice that many don't take. Great insights!

You can improve communication that is controlled by another department by always being prepared. Understanding what is important to the person you are communicating with is essential. Present value in what you are trying to present. Listen and respond to the persons questions and concerns. Your answer should be personalized.
R. that is a great way to improve communication between departments. It also helps get an understanding of what other's do. Great job.

I can improve communications by asking questions and participating in cross trainning programs.
Thanks for sharing this plan. This seems to be a great way to solve any issue going on, but should help with the improving the communication. I really like the part about continuing to meet since things can always get better.
Dr. Jean Norris
One possible remedy is to have the relevant leaders of each department meet in person to 1)make sure all recognize the issue, 2) Come up with a plan to improve the interdepartmental communications and 3) Schedule a regular follow-up meeting to discuss how the plan is working and tweak as necessary. These meetings should be should continue indefinitely as a way of preemptively addressing any and all issues that arise regarding communication or anything else of concern. Each dpartment leader should, of course, roll out the plan to relevant "players' within their department.
Katie, this is a great point. By analyzing your individual role, you can ensure that you are communicating to the best of your ability. And, it also sounds like you are wanting to collaborate with other departments or people to communicate better as a group.

Lindsay, that's great awareness. And it looks like you have a plan in order to make sure you are communicating effectively.

Audra, thanks for sharing this. It sounds like you plan to make sure your message is communicated clearly by asking the recipients their preferred method of communication.

It is difficult to control communication by another department. I can help improve it by asking for clarification on their request, and by identifying the intention of the communication.
Whitney, that's a great point. So I'm curious, based on this, what can you do personally to make sure your communication is consistent?
Dr. Jean Norris
Robert, consistent messaging is important. But you also make a great point that we also need to check for understanding. Great job.
Dr. Jean Norris
This is an interesting question because the word "controlled" stands out to me. Since there is a specific department that controls the communication, my role would be to positively influence and model effective communication. I would also ask questions to gain clarity and perspective as to how the department prefers communication. By doing this I would hope to gain relationship and trust to reflect as how to build stronger communication, so we could then work more effectively as a team. Has anyone had any personal experience in this area?
ask for clarity in understanding the functionality of that department and how best to communicate to them
That is a great point. If the message is not the same or confusing to the student, that can cause a multitude of problems.
It is my hope that my department and the other department both share the same ideas and values on what we are trying to communicate to our students. It is vital that both parties are in unity when sending out any form of commuication.
Scott, that's a great point. It sounds like consistent communication is important to you so that everyone is receiving the same message. Thanks for sharing this.

Improving communication, I feel is through educationing everyone that is on the same page or format, if no one is on the same page then communication at all levels breaks down.
