Communication
Hello Group,
This was a basic review of communication.
Interrupting while listening is something I am aware that I need to work on. This was a great reminder.
Thank you!
It sounds like you have experienced both sides of the interrupting pitfall. Being aware of our habits is the fist step to making a change. Thank you for your post!
I find myself accidentally interupting someone but i usually dont carry on my conversation until i know they're finished. But my boss does interupt often and i know that its quite frustrating.
Lee, that's a great question. First and foremost, it's great that you have this awareness because now, you can choose to do something about it. In regards to your question, I'm curious, what have you done in the past when this has occurred?

I personally interrupt people on the phone way more than I do in person. Since I can't see the person I can't tell if they are wanting to say anything else so I start talking. Inevitably, they start talking as well. Any thoughts on how to avoid this?
Ginny, thanks for your ideas here. It looks like this approach has worked for you in the past. Great job.

Heidi, thanks for your response and awareness here. Good luck

Hi Heidi,
This is definitely an area we all have to work on. I think that sometimes our minds get moving much quicker than our mouths and we feel like we need to rush to say what we think we need to say, which inevitably ends in cutting someone off. One technique I use when I feel my self wanting to interject, is I purposefully try to listen hard to that person instead of thinking about what I need to say. I have found that when I do that, I usually thankful because I realize that I was not really hearing them to begin with and would have responded incorrectly.
Thank you for the great prompt Heidi, although I have not ever had you interrupt our conversations! Have a great day!
