Great point JoAnn. Understanding a student's learning style - visual, auditory, kinesthetic or a combination of those styles, and customizing your communication to match that of their preferred learning style, can help you to better connect with your students.
another suggestion, Brad, is to watch them and see their style of learning. some high school students may appear distracted or not paying attention, when they really are... it's just how their minds work. they are in a multi-media environment all the time that they are use to doing tons of things at once.

Excellent! You do have an important job and tough one. High school students aren't the easiest crowd to work with so using body language to your advantage will give you a step up!
