How can communication be best managed with parent and student together

Would it be best to direct the message to the student and then look to the parents body language for their response?

Elizabeth,
Finding common ground definitely sounds like an effective approach. What are some of the topics that typically fall into this realm?

Dr. Jean Norris

My experience thus far has been that oftentimes parents and students are coming from different places, asking different questions. I have found that finding a common ground between parents and students has been very effective.

You're right, Andrew, being aware of the non-verbal cues being given by all parties is essential. It sounds like you've had some experience with students and parents who aren't on the same page. How have you addressed this situation when it arises without offending either the student or parent?

No, It is important to watch the body language of everyone in the room. But if the student is not on Board and the parents are pushing him or her, it is your obligation to bring it up to everyone involved. We do not want to set the student up for failure,

Great question! Knowing where to direct your questions can be difficult when you're trying to include everyone in the conversation. I think being aware of body language, facial expressions, etc. can help you to determine if the message was directed to the right party and how you might adapt if not.
