Body Language

I feel modeling positive body Language is the way to go.

Isn't it interesting how a student can say one thing but their body language says another? Listening with not only our ears but also our eyes can be so helpful. Thanks for your post.

I agree our body language is very important as well as the students body language,we can tell if something might be going on with a student just by there body language.

Marcus, absolutely. Even though the caller can't see you, they can hear your tone and so I think you have a great plan here.

I believe that when talking on teh phone it is also important to keep a postive body lanuage. While doing this it will allow me to listen better and also direct a postive attitude toward the student on the other end of the phone. How we act with our body language reflects our vocal tones on the phones.

Great point Barbara. It sounds like you use your body language as just another tool to help build rapport with the students.

Dr. Jean Norris

Our body language is everything I want my students to trust me this way we build a good realtionship and they keep in contact with me at all times.

Lisa, this is a great form of matching. By mirroring their communication style, the student will feel a level of trust and you will be able to start to build rapport with him or her.

Erin, I try to do the same thing. I often feel that if I can gauge the communication style of the student I'm speaking with, and communicate in a similar manner with them, that they will feel more comfortable and relate-able to me.

Erin, it sounds like you match the student in their body language. Great job. This will help you build rapport with the student.

If a student is usually calm and doesn't move around too much, I tried to tone myself down. Still giving the same enthusiam, just not as loud. I talk with my hands too, but I gage how excited I get based on the person I'm talking to.

Robert,
Making a good first impression can be a very memorable experience. What can you do to communicate in positive manner through your body language?

Dr. Jean Norris

Tone, attitude, mannerism, tattoos, attire, piercings all contribute to comminucations. Many people forget the importance of a good first impressions.

Cid,
Great insights! Perhaps the combination of behaviors is what people may react to. Let me know how it goes once you change these things to see if it makes a difference.

Dr. Jean Norris

I'm Hispanic and most of us talk moving our hands a lot and there's a lot of people that get the wrong message. They think that I'm upset or want to fight and I've been trying to moderated a little bit but is been a very hard process because this is how I've been raised.

But after reading this chapter I've found that maybe is not just my hands gestures is also my tone. So, now I know that I need to work my tone and my hands gestures because for some people can be offensive.

Amarilis,
So It sounds like you would model positive behaviors and body language to hopefully have the person you are working with follow your lead. Is that right?
