Seeking Common Ground

When working with students, I always tend to seek some common ground. That way it is easier to interact with them and to resolve any of their issues.

I believe that finding common ground is a key to communicating clearly with student. I also believing in using the collaborative communication skills can lead to a common ground and a better understanding of the student’s direction or outcome.  This is not a dictatorship but an agreement between two individuals.@migomez

Mirian,
Excellent insights! How do you handle situations when the prospective student is obviously still uncomfortable?

Dr. Jean Norris

I try to make the student feel as an equal when we are talking and I try to make them as comfortable as I can. I also take my time to listen to the student to better understand their situation. When their is good conversation there is more of a likely chance to resolve the problem.

Mirian,
Good point! What is a typical common ground area you find?
