Advanced Listening Skills
I limit my listening skills by thinking about other things that I may be more interested in or if I have alot of things to do that day I am thinking about that.
When we have so much going on in our day, this seems to be a frequent issue when it's time to meet with a student. One technique I use is just taking a moment before meeting with the student to re-acclimate myself to who they are and what their degree interest is. I also take a look at their file and any notes I made during a possible phone conversation. This helps me to really focus on the student and answer their questions. They are usually thankful that I remembered something about the previous phone conversation we may have had.

I think everyone can identify with this. This is one of my main struggles. The main way I stay engaged is by asking at least one question and rephrasing. Even if you are not interested in the conversation it shows that you are being respectful and trying to engage.
Linette,
Sorry for the delay in responding but I was thinking about all the projects on my plate. LOL! I'm totally kidding, Linette! Just wanted you to know that I truly understand where you are coming from. Awareness that you are doing this is the first step to addressing the limitation however. Good for you!
