Listening Skills
Ultimately, listening is an essential part of the admissions field and you always have to be closely listening to the student so you can guide them and help them with anything they may need.
I find that being a great listener is more effective than actually solving my students issues. Sometimes my students just need to vent and the issue is solved
Great awareness, Nancy. Body language can speak louder than words, sometimes!

Part of listening involves receptive, non-judgmental body language. When a student receives the non-verbal feedback that they are free to talk they are more apt to present their situation/need more clearly.
Deborah, It sounds like you really care about your students! Keep up the good work.
Dr. Jean Norris
Listening is the foundation of a long lasting relationship with your student. Students need to have someone they can come to to bounce ideas, discuss situations, seek advice, I always strive to give my students the time and attention they need. Even though they search me out, I make it a point to touch base with them.
Actively listening to what the student is saying is so important! Great point, Portia!
Dr. Jean Norris
Being a GOOD listner is the most important aspect of admissions from the moment you get on the phole to reach out to the perspective student. Being able to actively listen creates a sense of trust an the student knows that you care when you are listening to their concerns in efforts to help them.
Britton,
That is correct, listening is key. Thank you for sharing!
Dr. Jean Norris
Listening well in order to find root causes of issues is a must in this field. There are many reasons that are there as to why they are not doing something but nothing can be done about it until the actual why is brought up.
Mirian,
It's great to work in an environment where great behaviors are demonstrated. Can you describe what your supervisor and co-workers do to demonstrate good listening skills? In other words...how do you know that are good listeners?
Dr. Jean Norris
My immediate supervisor and my co-workers have all shown good listening skills.
Mirian,
Do you have examples of others you may have seen that indicate they are/aren't good listeners?
