How to make it work
It is so easy to hear a persons problem and tell them what they need to do to fix it. However sometimes our advice is not always the best advice. Work with a person by building a sound relationship with the person by understand where they are and how your guys can work together to solve their issue or problem.
Good point, Vidmary! Is there anything you can do before the student begins school to identify those obstacles that may come up later? This would help students to think about resources for overcoming the challenges if and when they do come up.
When a new program begin everybody is excited about it the little details does not come out until the student realize how hard it is to continue their education. An example the nursing program is complicated not all the student are build to manage the hours, clinical and courses at the same time. They want to be in it but they don't know how to resolve their time management. There is always one way to begin taking responsibility of their time management.
Advice is a tricky thing, isn't it? One of the pitfalls we often face in admissions is helping too much. We have the opportunity to ask good questions to help the student understand their situation and to encourage forward thinking so they can come up with the solutions to their own obstacles. What kinds of questions do you ask to help a student open his/her mind to the possibilities/solutions?
