Connection
When making a connection with a student you have to be sure that your attitude and the way you say your words aren't off putting. So, I always tend to engage with the student in an inviting and helpful tone.
Stacey, Great story and example. Thank you for sharing!

I had a similar situation we offer the wonderlic test and I had a student burst into tears and leave because she failed, after calling her later in the day and talking her through everything and letting her know that this is very common especially on the first attempt, that she has not taken a test in a long time, it happens to a lot of people. I got her to come in and she passed the test and is doing great in her program. But she trusted me enough to take that change. So Connection is very important.
Mirian,
Wow! Rapport/connection is really an important element of helping others. Your ability to have that connection led her to some great personal insights. Congratulations!

Once I had a student who felt extremely frustrated because she didn't obtain the grade she was hoping to get. After communicating with her and based on the connection I had built with her she understood that she had other opportunities to improve her grades.
Mirian,
Another great point! Can you tell us about a time when your words worked well (or not)?
