Exit Counseling

Both inperson and on line..it is a requirement.

How often does your institution conduct exit loan counseling? How has exit loan counseling affected your campuses default loan metrics?

We pull lists of student preparing to go out on Extern and conduct Group Exit Interviews for these students. Those students who withdraw are mailed the Exit Interview Letter and packet.

Students have to answer a series of questions online toward the end of their program. They need the pin that they created during the loan advising process to complete the exit interview

Donna,
That is a great approach for graduates. How do you handle exit counseling for students who withdraw?

Each student meets one on one with financial aid. During that time they discuss the plan for payment

At our instution the finanical aid adminastrator gets together with the entire class before graduation and has them complete the exit loan as a class. This way it insures that the entire class has completed it.

Tricia ,
This sounds like a great process, motivating them to complete as part of the graduation process!

our students are required to do exit counseling when they return to do their externship presentation. once they complete the exit counseling they receive their cap and gown for graduation.

The exit counseling is conducted by one of our financial aid officers. I feel that it is an important exercise for the students to participate in because it can help to reiterate their financial obligations, begin to explore possible repayment options and provide them with updates in terms of changes in federal student loan programs (i.e., subsidized loans will now accrue interest durin the grace period).

Our institution provides all students with the chance to have a face to face exit loan counseling. If for some reason student is unavilable then it is the istitutions job to send the information via postal mail with an envelope for return services.

My past experience with exit counseling included students completing the exit info on NSLDS. We also had group exit counseling but had somewhat difficulty keeping students attention. Many students took advantage of the time by studying for tests, etc. How do some of you engage your students?

We conduct counseling on every student that receives Title IV funding before they graduate.

My institution conducts exit loan counseling at the start of the program by informing the student to read the student hand book they also provide access to this information on line and conduct a face to face exit meeting so that the student fully understands the process.

The exit counseling is done on the computer on the NSLDS website and then a Finance Planner counsels the student and make sure that they know there rights.

Every student meets with our Financial Aid staff in order to ensure the student understands ever aspect of how exiting will effect their FA.

we require all be done online. it is so much faster and easier for the student.

Exit counceling is discussed when the start the program so they are aware of our procedures. When they are two weeks away from graduating, we start the exit process. We do it with integrity and make sure everything is in place so they know about their loans and balances.

Once they leave it is tough to get them back. One thing I have seen done in the past is sending a certified letter to the student explaining how failure to comply with exit counseling could impact future financial aid. I am not really sure how effective the letters have been but it gets the massage out that it is serious and the student needs to comply.

David,
I agree that in-person has its advantages. Any thoughts out there on effective methods to engage those who are unavailable (i.e. school initiated the withdrawal for non-attendance or distance education students)?
