Eric,

Welcome to the forum. Your E-learn site sounds quite comprehensive. From what I gather your students are required to purchase their books separate from their tuition or what they pay to the school. It is an excellent practice to have the emergency loans available to the students who are Pell eligible.

Cindy Bryant

Students are granted access to the e-learn site on the first day of the program. This insures students have access to power point presentations and classroom resources. Text books are available for purchase through the bookstore and are also available through online vendors such as Amazon. It is the students responsibility to have required text books. Pell eligible students are usually dispersed aid within the first 30 days of the program if all financial aid application materials are submitted prior to start date. In special circumstances the school makes emergency loans to students who are Pell eligable so that text books and other resources can be purchased. Copies of the text books are also available in the library and in special circumstances the program director may make a desk copy available to students.

Thank you! It's nice that the publishers are willing to do this so the students have necessary resources and we are compliant with education paradigms as well as copyright law. :)

Milissa,

Thank you for your thorough response. I really like the idea of obtaining the chapters from the publisher as needed. It allows the student to continue their academic career without interruptions.

All new students receive textbooks and materials during their orientation to the school. Continuing students are allowed to pick up textbooks through online ordering or from the bookstore at the campus during break week and the first week of the quarter. When an issue exists with obtaining the materials from the publisher, we receive the first several chapters of textbooks to put into our online LMS from the publishers so that students may read and prepare until backorders are received.

They are able to puchase used books, when we give them the ISBN number, they can also go online and puchase them through our online bookstore. They can purchase books where ever they are able to find the books for the appropriate course.

Hi Marty,

Thanks for participating in the forum. By allowing students to manage their book purchase they become immediately involved in their education.

Alison,

Are students able to purchase books off campus as well as on?

Bill,

The key here is equal distribution for all students. Is there a reason for the "lag" time in distibuting materials? The reason I ask is in an attempt to understand what the students studies are focused on during this perid of time.

Our day students receive their materials by the 8th day following the class start; our evening students receive their materials by the 13th day following the class start. This applies to PELL and non-PELL recipients.

At our campus, we invite students to an orientation one to two weeks before classes start. At orientation, they will meet their dean, their department chair, make sure their schedule is correct, the books they will need and the option to order those books through the campus. If the student chooses, then they will receive a book list to find the used books. We do offer students a book stipend to do this in some cases. Most of our new incoming students opt to just order their books through the campus, until they find out what works best for them.

Student have the ability to purchase books on their own or through the campus bookstore. As required by regulations, the course syllabus requires us to list all ISBN numbers of texts that will be used in the class. The campus bookstore opens two weeks prior to the start of class.

Maria,

This is really great, what happens if materials are delayed?

Justina,

How does your organization handle situations where the books fail to arrive?

Cindy Bryant, Facilitator

As a student enrolled in a virtual program the student receives access to their materials via their student portal, the learning management system where they will attend all courses in their respective degree program. Students also have the ability to access their physical materials via the bookstore online where materials are delivered to the address the student designates by UPS.
