Discrimination

Treat everyone fairly and with reasonable care. Is that the Golden Rule?

Everyone should be treated fairly even if they have a disability. We should not try to over accomodate a student as this could also impede their ability to meet the technical standards.

Patti,
That's true. The question is, what can YOU do, in your position, to see to it that students with disabilities at your institution are afforded those opportunities?

Dr. Jane Jarrow

Everyone should have an equal opportunity to do what they want.

Devon ,
That certainly is a good philosophy to hold, but we need to be careful as to how we define "fair." To some, "fair" means "the same to everyone" and it brings into question the provision of accommodations for students with disabilities. "Why should THEY get something different? Is that FAIR?" It might be better to say we should treat everyone JUSTLY. The word "just", in that context, means "each according to his/her needs." It is not by coincidence that the Department of JUSTice has enforcement authority over the ADA!
