The Impact of Disability in the Classroom...

Those who are disbled should receive the same opportunity as others when education is involved. However, when in a classroom and certain distractions or outbursts are created they do need to be addressed. One person can prevent the whole class from being able to learn properly, whether they are disabled or not.

Amanda,
Sure thing. I think it's important to remember that under the law, we are only required to make reasonable accommodations. If students are disruptive to the learning environment and creating an atmosphere in which an instructor cannot effectively teach or other students cannot learn, it may be appropriate to address the disruptive or inappropriate behavior as a conduct issue under the institutions student code of conduct.

Sarah Smoger

I agree with that that these distractions could disrupt the classroom experience and may interfere with other students and their learning. There is only so much that can be done about this because this is a disability and its not the students fault.

Neal,
Just be careful not to fall into the trap of thinking that if a student is acting out, it must be a student with a disability. There are lots of reasons for inappropriate behavior.

I trully agree, this is true. In order to be able to teach the classroom must have structure.

Crystal,
That's true. That's why we always say that students with disabilities must adhere to the same behavioral expectations as are in place for other students. The fact that they have a disability may explain why they engage in inappropriate behavior, but it doesn't excuse it.
