Accommodation Vs Success

I really appreciated this topic as an example of the balance within the legal. Instructors cannot look at accommodations as "passes" through courses but rather assistance to functional limitations. If a single accommodation can be made that "removes" the functional barrier, then our students are back on the same playing field and are all given the same opportunity to succeed again. Accommodation is not the easy pass but rather the removal of the stumbling block to create opportunity.

Nancy,
Absolutely. Access versus success is our mantra in the field of disability services.

This gave me more of an outlined understanding on diferentiating the difference between accomodation to remove the barriers due to the disability and just excusing behaviors so students can be successful. Access vs. success is the definitive line of determination.

Gloria,
Bingo! Making accommodation never means letting students with disabilities out of something. Rather, it means letting them IN -- giving them a chance to access the same opportunity to learn as is available to others.
