Accomadations

Accomadations seems like we would know what to do but it is a fine line between sayingthe right thing in your own mind to help someone and in reality, saying something that goes against the ADA. Education is key!

I agree. That's how our campus handles these situations.

Theosious,
I agree. It is important the the institution provide someone who is trained in legal issues surrounding disability AND in prescribing appropriate accommodations. That person serves as a resource to both instructors and students.

Let the student see the appropriate personnel to address these concerns.

Lisa,
Individual instructors shouldn't have to be making these tough distinctions by themselves. If your institution does not have someone charged with collecting disability-related information, talking with students with disabilities, and carving out appropriate accommodations (and passing those along to instructors!), I would ask the administration why not!
