The information should only be shared on a need to know basis. If all they need to know if the disability and the accommodations, that should be all that is released. The student should also feel some privacy and only need to discuss the important pieces. They are already in an uncomfortable situation, and may not even like the attention that they currently have to deal with.
Jarrell,
Agreed! Student confidentiality as it pertains to their disability is important and should be protected.

Tawnyn,
Great post and perspective. Sometimes the documentation that we read about a student can lead to false pretenses about a student's ability!

I agree with the statement students need to know so they can make accurate decissions
I agree. At the very least, the faculty needs to know what accommodations are needed or what will be used as they are the managers of that classroom and must be properly informed. Any additional information should be at the discretion of the student!
The Faculty should always be made aware of processes and procedures being used in their classroom in order to be prepared to assist the student should there be a malfunction and to be able to manage the classroom as others become aware!
I don't think only the information needed in order to provide the student with accommodations for equal access should be shared. This protects the student's privacy.
I agree with your statement. It should only be on a need to know basis.
I think the information shared should be on need to know basis. Not every instructor on campus will come in contact with this student. The information should be shared with their instructors for that semester. The disability services office should make contact with those instructors and give the details of what needs that student has. I don't think all the details should be given though. For example, the student may have ptsd. The only thing the instructors need to know is that fact. They don't need to know the story behind the disability development.
No
The trained professional educator should be able to make assesments and observatiosn with a clean slate about the student to avoid being assumptive about a student expectations
No. As an instructor, all I need to know is what accommodations a student needs.
Interacting with the student during class will allow me the best information on what I can do to provide for the student.
Many times, the student is a better in class then the written accommodatiosn will lead you to believe.
I don't believe more information should be provided to the faculty or staff. The disabled individual has provided documentation and proof to the appropriate personnel. That is private information and the only thing the faculty/staff needs to know is that accommendations are needed. If the student wants to disclose the information to faculty/staff that is their choice but its more personal medical records in which only the needing to know personnel should be privledged to.
