What is My Role?

I have worked in admissions before and so I have had some great experiences that influence what I believe my role is. I believe my role is ask questions and determine is the school is a good fit the student, but also that the student it a good fit for the school. Then it is my duty be create a professionsl, comfortable and pleasant admissions experience for the student.

Annette,
This thread was actually begun by someone taking the class who was speculating on what she could do, in her position as an admissions counselor, to operationalize what she had learned in the class. If your role is as an instructor, then I would say you have explained your part in this well!

This almost felt like a trick question. Hopefully, I am not oversimplifying this. Clearly, my role is to educate; and create an atmosphere where (all) of my students are able to learn to the best of their ability.

Gina,
It would be great if more people had that philosophy, especially where students with disabilities are concerned! GRIN

When I'm in doubt relating to my role, I ask my department for clarification. I tell students I'm not sure of the answer, but let me find out. It's easier to do something right the first time, rather than trying to fix something done/said wrong.

Crystal,
Sounds as though you are experienced at sorting through those questions in a way that acknowledges that students with disabilities are more LIKE every other student than they are different. You ask those question of/about everyone, and you apply the answers with an even hand. Good job!
