unborn child
One of the subject discussed in this course is about the unborn child.
We need to clarify that the 19 year old student may add the unborn child as a dependent only if the student works or receive funds of any kind. If the student doesn't work or doesn't receive any funds and lives with parents, then the unborn child can't be added as her dependent because it will not be supported by the student more than half of her income.
Claudia,
I agree this can be a tricky situation that requires special attention when attempting to document. If you have a method that works well for your student population that is great. It is great that you have found a method that works and prevents the student any undue stress.

Yes, this is an issue that always has to be treated with care. It is easy for a student to indicate that they have a child but that doesnt necesarily mean they provide for the child for than 50%. when we have these situations we have a simple form (Low Income Explanation)that the students complete in order to determine if the student is actually supporting the child. This method is really helpfull and avoids having to ask so much personal questions...:)
Miriam,
You are correct. The unborn child must be receiving more than 50% of the support from the student to be considered in the household size. Appreciate you pointing out the specifics of the requirement.
Sincerely,
