The Impact of Placement Services
How does the Placement Department specifically and positively impact other departments in your school? What are ways that Placement Services can impact enrollments?
An active Placement Center will assist the student/graduate with securing a job/career. It is one portion of the complete cycle of the student, enrollment is the beginning through, retention and education of the student through academics and then assistance with placement. Successful placement rates help in the enrollment process, keep students engaged when they observe their classmates success, and ultimately, refer other family and friends to seek the same support system they finished in.
I agree with this. One thing that we have been doing is we now have monthly meetings with the admissions team on our campus and just give them updates on new employers we are working with and trends that we are seeing. We talk about new companies coming into the area and new partnerships that we have. We also talk about some of our difficulties we are having. It really gives them more insight in which they can share with potential students.
Things that I have seen that make students/graduates unemployable have been their background. I agree with Dr. Schulz, that this starts with admissions and we should be ensuring that potential students are clear of backgrounds or things that would deter them from taking certifications or stopping them from being gainfully employed in their field of study. I know a lot of schools have forms that potential students sign to ensure they are aware that a background or things of that nature could affect them being hired and etc to ensure they are aware. I know for me, it's about working with the students from day one, getting to know them and helping them with the process all the way through.
The Placement Department impacts a lot of different departments on the campus. One that comes to mind is the Admissions Department. When we successfully assist graduates in getting jobs in their field, they are more inclined to share the good news with others. They might be asked on their job, what school did you go to and they will share the information which can lead to more interest in the school.
If you bring back graduates to speak during workshops to current students and talk about their success in finding jobs in their field and working with the career center, it can help education retain students and want to work more closely with the Career Center Department. Bringing back Alumni also allows for students to continue to remember their goals and why they enrolled in the first place.
Assisting graduates get jobs while in school even if they are general jobs also helps students pay any loans or any in school payments that might be required. This can have a positive effect on the financial aid/bursar department. Placing graduates in career related jobs prior to graduation can be positive and negative. We have spoken on many conference calls about postive things that occur when we place graduates early as well as the negative. Can anyone share some stories of both, it's great to get different opinions?
The school that I work at is brand new, making the Career Placement Department brand new as well. I think this is a crucial time in the development of not only the department but the school as a whole. The Placement Department impacts all aspects of the school and at this time, specifically admissions. We are an extremely small school, accepting only 6 students at a time so we specifically impact admissions with our success. Students looking to get into the field are looking at the success of this department in making their decisions to attend this school. Being that we are such a new school we are all still learning about what is needed to make this program a success and having a successful Placement Department will greatly help admissions.
I am new to this field, but from the information I have received through training, it seems a placement department can positively impact most other areas of the school. It can help the Admissions Department by looking at the areas where past graduates are excelling and obtaining employment.
Placement Services can impact enrollment by providing students and graduates continued services such as a library which includes publications in areas of training the school provides and encouraging enrollment in professional organizations to name a few. Placement Services can also impact enrollment, I believe, by fostering and maintaining exceptional rapor with all students, past and present.
This is a good questions. In my case we have Hispanic students that are challenged with speaking English and that becomes, harder to place and then they in turn get discouraged.
When people decide to go back to school, often times their ultimate goal is employment. When the Placement Department has positive outcomes, it helps more than just the graduate who is offered employment. When prospective students hear about the placements it is incentive to apply.
One thing that I constantly hear admissions reps discussing is placement rate. Prospective students what to know how likely they are to get a job after investing in their education. Being able to tell a prospective student that we have a high placement rate helps that individual decide to take that step to come to school here.
Placement services impacts many departments at the college. As placement becomes more successful, the college will be seen as a place that trains people for good careers. This gives admissions another tool to enroll motivated people. If the students are motivated they will perform well in class. Performing well in class will give them the competence to work in the field. The goal is to find work in a chosen field and it all cycles back to a successful placement program.
The Placement Department at any school is the hub of what all other departments will do. If successful the placement department will maintain a great relationship with the staff and faculty.
The placement department works with every other staff member in the school. From admissions to the dean and director of a career school. The staff and more specifically admission will have a great relationship with placement because the can positively impact one another. If placement is good it will ease the fear of potential students because they feel more confident that they will be able to be placed once their program is finished. This in turn will increase the number of students that enroll and completed a program at the school. This will also increase the amount of successful graduates which will refer others to our school. These departments truly look to one another to help make a school successful.
When it comes to faculty they are the connection with all current students, they see them everyday and for extended periods of time. Thus having a very strong relationship with them post graduation. Constantly involving the teachers in who is working and who is not will not only strengthen the working relationship of these two departments but will increase the number of graduates we can reach post graduation, and help with placement assistance. In my experience the faculty is essential when connecting with graduates and maintaining their involvement with the school.
How does the Placement Department specifically and positively impact other departments in your school? What are ways that Placement Services can impact enrollments?
The Placement Department specifically impacts the schools attractiveness for future enrollments. When prospective students can see the positive placement of past/current students in the field of study, it is a confidence builder, admissions conversation tool, and skill enhancer to ALL students. The Placement Department can also, enhance the Education Department by encouraging students to perfect their skills, and keeping them abreast of what the employers are seeking in potential candidates.
When past/current students can speak to others about the assistance the Placement department gave to them, it becomes a word of mouth tool for prospective enrollees.
When the placement rates are in black and white it becomes a positive focus for admissions to add to the conversation for prospective students.
When the placement department can assist with other services, i.e., child care services, p/t job, "survival jobs", job fairs, interviewing skill, resume' writing, this builds the students trust, confidence and pride.
Post-secondary students are the students who want/need a career FAST!! Possibly the student who felt as if "college" wasn't for them. The returning to school due to loss of job student. The "I need to better myself and get out of working in fast food restaurants" students. When these types of students see that a school genuinely cares about their success they are proud to promote the school. This is how having a Placement Department can Positively impact other departments and enrollments
The Placement Department can have a positive effect when they work with all departments towards the goal of successful employment for the student(s). This helps create a unified environment and one that encourages the students to be successful, since everyone on campus will be working with the students to increase their employability skills.
Specifically, high placement rates translate into higher enrollments, increased retention and lower loan default rates.
The Placement Department can impact enrollments by educating the admissions team on current job trends and opportunities in their area that are available to graduates. A best practice would be to attend the admissions staff meeting on a monthly basis to update the team on new and different jobs that graduates have secured. Another best practice is to be present at Admissions open houses to speak the prospective students and their families. And Lastly, Placement professionals should always be available to meet with prospective students on their campus tour.
The Placement Department would impact other departments greatly at our school, such as admissions building core relationships with our future students. These students need to know what are their chances of landing employment after graduation. It would also benefit the staff as they would take part in such workshops. In the end, it does benefit the institute; however, it impacts the student greatly with having the education of their program plus landing a job after graduation.
The ways that P.S can impact enrollments is strictly informing the candidate the institutes placement rates with guidance that is available after they have been accepted to attend.
The placement department impacts other departments specially admissions, because student come to school to develop their skills ultimatly for a career , that they can be placed in their choosen field, also they can be working while attending school.
Martha,
Good point. That is why it is important to keep their eyes on where they will work upon graduation. Plan visits to the workplace. Thanks
Dr. Susan Schulz
If the students know the places that they will be able to work everything will be different from all points of view
Beatriz,
We see that a great placement can mean a great school. The better placement rates then the more students will want to enroll. Great placement inspires students to complete and graduate. With great placement you will know where more jobs are. Thanks, susan
Dr. Susan Schulz
if there is a conjunction between the two departments the impact will be of great importance
