Keeping graduates on the right path to employment.

Sometimes I have graduates that just don't follow the information they are given when searching for a job. :-( I bring them back in after their externship and update their resumes and discuss job searching, networking, etc. Any ideas regarding this would be greatly appreciated. :-)

Cheryl ,

Interesting points. We think people enroll in career schools for the extra attention, services, and hand-holding. Many may be needy, lack confidence, and have a low estimate of their skills. So if we enroll them we are responsible for doing everything we can to change their lives and help them be successful.Perhaps they are lazy and want the work done for them. We have to work harder to show them that they will be on their own once on the job and have to look to themselves for answers. Yes, very challenging and we probably won't be successful with everyone. Maybe that says we should set higher admissions standards. Thanks, Susan

This is true - I find students are just lazy and want the work done for them. There really isn't anything you can do, if they do not want better for themselves. The only thing you can do is be the mentor, the supporter and encourager.

Paula,
Good point. Sometimes all career services skills that grads need to know have to be in a required and graded course. Making things mandatory is tough but sometimes it is the only way to get it to work. Grads are afraid to go into the workplace and leave the safety of their warm and friendly school! So we have to help them to build their confidence through skill building. Thanks, Susan
