Employment Skills Workshops

Our Placement Department has initiated what they have titled "Journey to Success" for our students. This starts on the first day of class. All employees of the PD go to each classroom, introduce themselves, hand out "train tickets" for the workshops the students will be traveling during their months of skills training (there is a different train station for each skill). We have building your portfolio, resume development, interviewing (mock and informal from our employers), dress for the interview, and several other different seminars which we believe will benefit our students. Since we can't make these workshops mandatory, does anyone have any suggestions of how to entice ALL our students to attend at least one? We are having about 65% turn out and we really want about 80%.

In our opinion what should be required are up to 20 career services workshops, projects etc that are offered throughout the time the student is taking classes. Never wait until the end for career services training. Our opinion. Re Alumni - suggest you all enroll in the alumni course offered by MaxKnowledge. Susan

We do make the last workshop a requirement, but they also meet with F/A at that time so to me that is too late in the game!

I will work on making it a requirement as we do have professional development days in each mod and I'm sure the instructor would love to have a "guest speaker" and different activities.

Alumni mentoring - we never thought of that! Great idea that I will present at our CS accountability meeting tomorrow - and I will give you the credit, Dr. Schulz. Thanks!

Before I take my final I will update you on several things that we have started from your suggestions and let you know where we stand.

This is soooo great. Very creative and engaging. Here's a suggestion to get all students to attend - make it a requirement. Also ask your alumni to mentor one student and help that student to each train station. Susan
