Free Alumni Membership

What other memberships that are offered professionally are FREE? All memberships that I have been affiliated with in the past and present have a fee of some sort related to it for either initial membership or yearly.
Why should an alumni membership be different?

Virginia,
I agree and I believe most Career Colleges are moving in a different direction than universities by providing free membership to their alumni communities.

Alumin membership should definately be FREE! I mean everyone has paid for college, grad school, etc. To have a free alumni membership draws MORE alumni. Most people starting off would definately not even join if they had to pay and did not attend an institution that they actually like. But all in all, everyone paid for their tuition, why should they have to pay for the Alumni membership?

Ginny,
This is obviously a decision your advisory board would need to sort through. Part of that will be asking questions like:
What is our goal? Are we trying to obtain and maintain a connection with as MANY grads as possible? What will the alumni 'get' for their membership? (the graduates will certainly be asking this question as they evaluate their own participation)
To move even further backwards - Is it really necessary to provide an "association"? What if all you're asking them to do is reconnect with your institution and by the very nature of being a graduate, they are already part of your "Alumni Community"?
It's good to ask these questions and questions like them as an advisory board.
June
